Ms. Norma lay in a body bag at the morgue for about two hours, until the porter was preparing to take her to the crematorium and was startled to see that she was still breathing.
Mrs. Norma Silveira da Silva, 90 years old, was declared dead on November 24 at Sao Jose Regional Hospital in Brazil. She was placed in a body bag and lay in the morgue until a porter arrived to prepare her for the crematorium.
Alarmed to see that the “dead person” was still breathing, he immediately reported it to the hospital and the medical staff brought Ms. Norma back to the hospital bed.
Ms. Jessica Martins Silvi Pereira, a friend who accompanied the patient to the hospital, said: “Norma was put in a body bag from 11:40 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. the next morning. When the staff opened the body bag, they discovered that she was still breathing but very weak. She tried to ask for help but was too weak to do anything because she was almost suffocated and about to die.”
The reason for this rare incident is that Ms. Norma was issued two death certificates even though she was still alive. The first death certificate mistakenly stated that she died of infection.

Even though he was saved from the body bag, something sad still happened. Just over a day after being locked in the morgue, Ms. Norma died, but the cause of death was not announced by doctors. She was cremated on November 26.
Hospital officials, the Medical Ethics Committee and the Brazilian Mortality Commission are investigating to clarify why the woman was put in a body bag even though she was still alive. Norma’s relatives are planning to sue the hospital.
In June 2023, a similar case occurred in Ecuador. Mrs. Bella Montoya, 76 years old, a retired nurse, was declared dead and placed in a coffin for burial procedures. After 5 hours in there, she terrified her relatives by knocking on the coffin wall.
Relatives opened the coffin lid and were happy to see that she was still alive. However, this woman also died after a week of being in special care.
Mr. Barbera Montoya, Ms. Bella’s son, claimed not to have received any medical explanation about what happened and filed a complaint, asking to identify the doctor who declared his mother dead while she was still alive. Ecuador’s Ministry of Health did not provide further information about the medical investigation surrounding this incident.
