This dish is described as one of the most dangerous foods in the world, alongside poisonous puffer fish and bullfrogs.
The Independent reported that an elderly man in Korea died of a heart attack after choking on “raw octopus”. The dish called “San-nakji” – live octopus with wiggling tentacles – is famous as a local dish known to many tourists.
The incident happened on October 23 in Gwangju, a city in southern Korea. The 82-year-old man was enjoying delicious San-nakji when he choked. A piece of octopus antennae got stuck in his throat. Immediately afterward, witnesses called rescue forces in Gwangju.

When the first medical staff arrived on the scene, they found the man in a state of cardiac arrest and suffocation. They performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) but could not save him.
Despite the doctors’ best efforts, this man still could not survive and was determined to have died at a local hospital.
What is San-nakji?
San-nakji is a famous local delicacy in Korea, made from salted live octopus and sesame oil.
This dish is famous globally for its unique and potentially dangerous preparation. Live octopus is served to diners immediately after its tentacles are cut into parts, the nerves of the tentacles are still active and cause them to wiggle on the plate.
This dish has become famous worldwide, partly due to its inclusion in the 2004 film Oldboy , in which a famous character eats live octopus at a sushi bar. It has been described as a “bizarre and daring” culinary experience.
San-nakji’s popularity extends beyond cinema, with YouTube videos showing thrill-seeking tourists trying the dish at local fish markets.
Despite the risks, this dish is extremely popular in Korea and many YouTubers and content creators often share videos of themselves devouring it.
It is recommended that diners should cut into very small pieces and chew thoroughly before swallowing. People should also limit alcohol consumption when trying food because getting drunk can increase the chance of choking.
The recent death of an 82-year-old man is not an isolated case. There have been a few similar cases in the past, most of which were caused by suffocation. According to Korea Herald, 3 people died of suffocation while eating live octopus between 2007 and 2012, 2 others died in 2013 and a man in his 70s died in 2019.
Controversy surrounding San-nakji
Described as one of the world’s most dangerous dishes, San-nakji is often compared to other risky dishes such as poisonous pufferfish and bullfrog.
