Going to vote is probably the first time many young people actually have to sign their names on paper.
With the election being so tight in Nevada – one of seven battleground states that could decide who will be the next President of the United States – it could take days for officials to count the ballots.
It took time to know who won this state, not only because of potential legal challenges and vote counting, but also because thousands of young voters didn’t know how to properly sign their ballots.
Election officials in the Silver State say there are about 13,000 defective ballots that still need to be “fixed.” Voters whose ballots have signature issues will be contacted and given the opportunity to verify their identity. Voters have until November 12 to resolve those issues.
The counting of votes takes place immediately after voters cast their votes.
Part of the reason for the higher rate of discarded ballots is that young voters don’t know how to sign their ballots, said Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar.
“This is an opportunity, maybe the first time they actually have to use an official signature,” Aguilar told CNN. “What’s on their driver’s license, what’s on their voter registration form, what’s on their ballot, all a little bit different.”
He explained that the signatures of many young voters did not match the signatures on their driver’s licenses.
“A lot of it is because young people today don’t have a signature (in writing). And when they register to vote through the automated voter registration process, they sign a digital sheet and that becomes their authorization signature,” he told The New York Times.
Many young voters do not sign their names correctly in writing because they are too familiar with digital signatures.
Polls show a tight presidential race in Nevada. The RealClearPolitics average of polls shows President Trump leading Vice President Harris by 0.6 percentage points.
In an election that can be decided by a few thousand votes, the remaining ballots waiting to be processed for validity can make the difference in who wins the state. And with a deadline of a week after Election Day to resolve those issues, it could take days to know who won.
