( Yeni ) – Ly Chieu Hoang is the only queen in Vietnam but also has a strange fate with 7 different titles including being a nun.
The woman in Vietnamese history went from emperor to nun
According to Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu, Ly Chieu Hoang (1218-1278) real name Ly Phat Kim, later changed his name to Ly Thien Hinh, son of King Ly Hue Tong and Queen Tran Thi Dung. At the age of 7, Ly Chieu Hoang was ceded the throne by his father. She became the only queen in Vietnamese history.
In 1225, according to Tran Thu Do’s arrangement, Ly Chieu Hoang was forced to cede the throne to her husband Tran Canh. The Ly Dynasty declined and was replaced by the Tran Dynasty. Ly Chieu Hoang could not protect the Ly family’s inheritance and could not decide his own future.
After taking off his imperial robe and inviting Tran Canh to ascend the throne and become the first king of the Tran Dynasty, Ly Chieu Hoang was ordained queen, called Chieu Thanh. Seven years later (1232), when she was 14 years old, she gave birth to a son, but unfortunately the crown prince died soon after. To keep the throne for the Tran family, Tran Canh was forced to marry Princess Thuan Thien (who was now the wife of Tran Lieu, the king’s brother) and demoted Chieu Thanh to be a princess. Too sad and depressed, she shaved her head and became a monk.

Her life went through many bumps and turns, becoming the person with the strangest fate in Vietnamese history with 7 different titles, from princess, crown prince, queen of the Ly Dynasty to queen, princess. lords, nuns and finally ladies under the Tran dynasty. During the first resistance war against the Mongol invaders (1257-1258), General Le Tan achieved many victories, especially saving Tran Thai Tong in a fierce battle, so the king changed his name to Le Phu. Bare. After driving the Mongol army out of the country, Tran Thai Tong not only conferred a title on Le Tan but also married his ex-wife to him.
During 20 years of living with Le Phu Tran, Chieu Thanh gave birth to 2 children. The son is the Supreme Marquis Tong (some research suggests that this person is the famous general Tran Binh Trong, famous for the saying: I would rather be a ghost of the South than a king of the North). Her daughter is Ung Thuy, Princess Khue.
According to official history, while visiting her hometown of Co Phap (now Tu Son, Bac Ninh), she passed away at the age of 60 and was worshiped at Dragon Temple. Although she was the official king of the Ly dynasty, the eight kings before her (from Ly Thai To to Ly Hue Tong) were worshiped at Do Temple, but she was worshiped in another area.

The reason why Ly Chieu Hoang was not worshiped with other kings of the Ly dynasty
Although he was the official king of the Ly dynasty – the brilliant dynasty of Dai Viet, laying the foundation for the prosperity of later dynasties – Ly Chieu Hoang was not recognized fairly by history books. The Ly Dynasty had 9 kings, but only 8 kings before her (from Ly Thai To to Ly Hue Tong) were worshiped at Do Temple, but she was worshiped in another area, called Dragon Temple.
Some researchers believe that because Ly Chieu Hoang lost the Ly house, he was considered guilty of a crime against the family, was not recognized and had to be worshiped separately. According to Professor of History Vu Van Ninh, it may be because she was king for 2 years but because she was still young, she did not make any contributions to the country. Furthermore, later she gave up the throne, then was dethroned as queen, became a princess and finally “married off to her husband” and was no longer a person in the Ly palace.
