(Yeni) – Narcissus is a beautiful, elegant flower that many people love when spring comes. But how to plant daffodils so that they can bloom during Tet?
Narcissus is a beautiful flower and also has other names such as Peruvian lily, Inca lily. The flower originated from South America then grew in many lands. Daffodils come in white, yellow, red, and pink, but in Vietnam, people prefer white daffodils to celebrate Tet, which means purity and innocence.
Daffodils bring new energy, full of vitality, signaling a lucky and elegant spring. Hobby daffodil is an elegant hobby that many people enjoy. According to Vietnamese folk beliefs, daffodils blooming on the afternoon of the 30th day of Tet before the ceremony to invite ancestors to eat the New Year’s Eve meal are said to bring good luck and longevity. Blooming flowers will bring prosperity and luck to that person’s family in the new year.
Daffodils are often planted aquatically to place on guests’ tables during Tet. If planted correctly, the plant will flower in about 30 days. So at the end of the year, many people sell daffodil bulbs for flower lovers to start planting.
Time and temperature for planting daffodils
You should plant daffodils 1 month before Tet with non-sweet tubers, and with peeled tubers, about 25 days. In years when the temperature is low or cold, plant early; if the weather is warm, plant later.
Characteristics: Narcissus likes humidity and warmth but does not tolerate weather that is too hot or too cold. Narcissus is also a light-loving plant, so you must pay attention to the location of the plant.
Choose a good daffodil variety
When choosing daffodil bulbs, choose bulbs with thick stems, without scratches or moldy spots. You should choose daffodil bulbs that are round and flat, with firm skin. The glossier the brown tubers, the better. When choosing a bud, you can gently squeeze it with your hand. If it is a flower bud, the bulb will be firm and elastic. If it is a leaf bud, the bulb will be spongy and inelastic. When choosing, pay attention to picking tubers with 2-3 sprouts and when planting, the shape will be more beautiful.
Narcissus can be planted in aquatic plants, in sand or in soil. To celebrate Tet, you should plant aquatic plants because their leaves will be shorter and the roots will be long, straight, small, white and transparent, not crooked or sparse like when planted in sand. When growing aquatic plants, you should choose clean water because dirty water will cause the daffodil roots to rot.
How to peel daffodil bulbs
Once you have a good tuber, peel off the brown outer skin and surrounding dry leaves, wash and peel off the black roots at the base of the tuber. After peeling the roots, soak the daffodils in water for 48 hours to soften them and then peel them. Carefully separate each layer of skin, lightly score from the top down about 2/3 of the flower bulb, then lightly score around the bulb and gently separate the layers of skin. When reaching the middle of the tuber, do it slowly to avoid damaging the inflorescences, leaves and flower stalks.
You need to use a knife to lightly cut the slit between the sprouts, revealing the flowers and leaves. Shaping the bulb is very important, so you must prune the leaves to avoid the leaves covering the flowers. A beautiful pot of daffodils, in addition to flowers, must also have leaves that are even, low, and beautifully curved.
After peeling, put the tubers in water to clean. Note that you should leave tap water in the pot for 24 hours before using it to avoid chlorine affecting the growing of daffodils.
You need to regularly change the water to make sure the tubers don’t rot. If they do, cut off the rotten part and add a little salt to the water. Change the water regularly once a day. The amount of water should be equal to the bulb, enough for the daffodil bulb to float but not too submerged.
Light: Narcissus likes light. After 3 to 4 days, wait for the cuts to heal, then take them outside but avoid direct sunlight. Every day the plant needs to receive at least 6 hours of light. If there is not enough light, the daffodil leaves will be small and produce few flowers.
Monitor the water: When growing aquatic daffodils, you must monitor the water regularly to avoid cloudy, yellow and dirty water. Water should always be turned off the faucet for 24 hours to allow the chlorine to evaporate. You can use liquid fertilizer to water the plants. About 4-6 weeks after planting, daffodils will begin to flower.
